Promote higher participation and reduction in withdrawal behaviours
Effectively reduce stress and anxiety
Improve self-esteem and self-determination
Stimulate memory and problem solving
Lower blood pressure
Increase engagements and positive outcomes in rehabilitation
Increase verbal and non-verbal communication
Foster positive emotions and mood
Help clients to express their feelings
Help to develop social skills
Boost quality of life
And ultimately, improve the outcome of the therapy.
Katrina’s Animal Background
One of my great passions has been animals, I was fortunate to have been allowed a pet hamster and then rabbits as a child. I developed a very strong bond with a rabbit when I was about seven years old, and I know she was therapeutic to be around.
My family had a pet tortoise and a cat when I was a teenager. Once I got married my husband and I have had pet dogs. Every-one of them have been special we have also had a cat and looked after our son’s cat for a while. I know sometimes people ask if I am a dog person or a cat person. I’m definitely both!
Currently we have a wonderful Dalmador (Dalmatian X Labrador) called Cassie, and a beautiful Manchester terrier called Tilly. Cassie and I are in training with PAWS.
My first job when I left school was looking after animals and I completed my animal husbandry training. Looking after the welfare of animals, understanding the importance of good care, adequate housing, excellent nutrition and veterinary care.
I had horse riding lessons as a child and enjoyed being with horses immensely, when our boys were little, I started taking them to the stables not only to ride but to hang out with the horses, dogs and cats in our spare time. I was fortunate enough to have my own horse for a while.
Our youngest son completed his apprenticeship as a farrier and married a groom who has a passion for showjumping. My daughter in Law now runs a very successful equestrian centre and my son continues to be a farrier, so I have the pleasure of spending lots of time around horses and I will complete my training to provide equestrian therapy in due course.
